The way mushrooms and truffles grow is very fascinating, they originate from the mycelium. If you want to know more about it, dive into the world of fungi. All mushrooms, but also yeasts belong to the kingdom of fungi. There are certain mushrooms that contain the psychoactive substance psilocybin.
For thousands of years people have ingested such mushrooms to take special, mind-expanding trips. This can enrich your view of the world. But in small quantities (microdoses), mushrooms and truffles can have subtle effects on your well-being. That's why in this blog we explain more about the growth of these fungi.
When you see a group of mushrooms growing in the forest, it's only the fruit that's formed above the ground. Below ground, most of the mold itself: that is the network of fungal threads, which is called the mycelium. Via long threads the mycelium spreads and that can cover a large surface.
The mycelium can already develop from a single spore. These are produced by the mushroom above the ground and this way the fungus takes care of spreading. When you start growing mushrooms at home, you'll get a container with a nutrient soil in which the mycelium is present. The mushrooms will grow from this.
So fungi reproduce in an asexual manner. But that's not the only job of the mycelium. The network of threads absorbs nutrients from the soil. It breaks down organic material into smaller particles which are then returned to the soil. The mycelium helps to keep the soil healthy because it has a filtering function and cooperates with plants and trees in the environment (symbiosis). That's why fungi are so important in an ecosystem.
How are truffles created?
As described above, mushrooms are the above-ground fruit bodies of the fungus. But what are truffles then? They are not the famous truffles that are worth a lot of money and are found by boars. The truffles in question are also formed by the mycelium network.
These magic truffles are sclerotia. They also form underground and are fruiting bodies. The mycelium forms truffles if the circumstances are not right for a while. For example it hasn't rained for a long time or there are not many nutrients available. The truffles are then formed as an underground storage of extra nutrients. It is a storehouse for when the ordinary food runs out, making it easier for the fungus to survive a little longer.
Truffles look different than magic mushrooms. Mushrooms have the familiar shape: a nice round cap on a stem. Truffles look like small irregular shaped balls. They are tougher and contain less moisture than magic mushrooms. That is why they are hard to chew when you eat them raw.
Just like there are different types of mushrooms (for example Mexican, Thai, McKennaii or Colombian), there are also different types of truffles. Just like with the magic mushrooms, there is a difference in effect and intensity. If you want to use one of them, check which one would be suitable for your situation and experience.
The application of truffles and magic mushrooms
Shrooms and truffles are usually taken to trip: the psychoactive compound psilocybin causes your perception to change. You can get visual hallucinations, your thinking speeds up, your senses sharpen and you can get all kinds of insights that can turn your view of the world upside down. Tripping can teach you a lot about yourself, others and life itself.
Another possible application is microdosing. Not everyone wants to get high, but would still like to experience the benefits of magic mushrooms and truffles. When microdosing, you only take a very small dose of mushrooms or truffles, usually 1/10 of a normal dose. Microdosing can help with mood problems, among other things (depression, PTSD or fears), with ADHD, concentration problems and with pain. The effects are subtle, but it can give you just that little push, so that you feel good about yourself, without suffering from the mind-altering effects.
Do you want to give microdosing a chance, then you can find the handy Microdosing XP truffles. Each dose is packed separately, so they stay fresh for a long time.
