Often grain such as rye or corn is used because it is rich in carbohydrates and other nutrients essential for the growth of the mycelium (the root structure of the mushroom).<\/li>\n<li>Substrate (soil): The substrate provides physical support for the mycelium and aids in water retention. This may include wood, straw, sawdust or any other organic material in which the mycelium can grow.
