But then there is neurogenesis, a process by which the brain can partially restore connections. We discuss what is known about this and what is speculated about microdosing, emphasizing that there is no proven effect in humans for this yet.

What is neurogenesis?

It was not so long ago that scientists were convinced that the brain could not create new neurons. If the brain was damaged, functions were lost forever. But recent research has shown that neurogenesis is possible, and can happen throughout our lives.

What exactly is neurogenesis? This is the process by which new neurons (nerve cells) are created in the brain. This fascinating phenomenon has been observed in different areas of the brain, both in humans and animals. It is basically the same as skin growing back or a bone mending. So even our brains can heal themselves again (to some extent).

Research in animals and limited studies in humans indicate that neurogenesis may play a role in:

  • cognitive functioning
  • vote
  • memory

Although this is still the subject of ongoing research. It may even be associated with the incidence of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and depression.

When the brain can create new neurons, it can replace these damaged or missing neurons. This allows the brain to better adapt and learn. This is called brain plasticity. Furthermore, neurogenesis can help form connections between nerve cells, which can promote communication between cells. Research also shows that neurogenesis can play a role in reducing stress and improving mental health.

There is speculation that microdosing could theoretically play a role in stimulating neurogenesis, but this has not yet been conclusively proven in humans.

Wat is neurogenese

How can microdosing promote the process of neurogenesis?

When you microdose, you use very low doses of a mind-altering substance (such as magic mushrooms or truffles) to support your health. The advantage is that due to the low dosage, you will not suffer from the psychoactive effects.

Microdosing has been growing in popularity in recent years because of potential benefits in terms of:

  • creativity
  • energy
  • concentration

Its potential role in supporting neurogenesis is under investigation – evidence for this in humans is still largely lacking.

Microdosing can be done by various means, such as:

  • psilocybin
  • DMT
  • LSD

These substances interact with serotonin receptors in the brain. This can cause a release of a growth hormone called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF plays an important role in neurogenesis and stimulates the growth and development of new brain cells.

Scientific research on microdosing and neurogenesis

Several studies show this:

  • 2018, University of California (Cell Reports): Neurons of rats received LSD or DMT. This stimulated the growth of neurons and they formed more branched connections. View research.
  • 2013, Johns Hopkins University: Mice were given psilocybin and showed a small increase in new cells in the hippocampus. View research.
  • 2021, Yale University: A single dose of psilocybin prompted the brains of mice to form new connections. View research.

It is important to emphasize that this concerns only animal models or in vitro studies with brain cells. Results of this often do not translate easily to people.

Wat is neurogenese

Is microdosing recommended for neurogenesis?

Doctors and scientists used to think the brain was a static organ. When damaged, there was little hope for recovery. Now, fortunately, we know better: neurogenesis appears to possibly take place throughout life. There is interest in ways to support that process.

However, research on microdosing and neurogenesis is still in its infancy:

  • Limited and mostly circumstantial evidence
  • Based primarily on animal research
  • No convincing evidence that microdosing is effective or safe in humans

We recommend that, especially in the case of illness or mental illness, you do not take mind-altering drugs lightly. Seek advice from your doctor or get guidance from a therapist. Mushrooms and truffles are also not suitable for everyone and can cause side effects. Do not use them if you are allergic to mushrooms.

Microdosing is sometimes mentioned as a possible way to support neurogenesis, but there is no convincing evidence in humans for this. Therefore, it is not medically recommended. Medicinal mushrooms are also an option. Some of these are known for their properties that support brain functioning, such as Lion’s Mane.

Clinical research with humans

Although many studies on psychedelics and neurogenesis have so far been conducted in animals, there is growing interest in clinical research with humans. More recent studies in people with depression (e.g., Carhart-Harris et al., 2021 in The New England Journal of Medicine) show that psilocybin can have positive effects on mood and cognitive flexibility in a controlled therapeutic setting.

However, this does not mean that microdosing (low doses without guidance) is currently proven effective or safe to promote neurogenesis in humans. Existing clinical trials typically focus on other outcomes, such as mood or depression, rather than directly demonstrating neurogenesis.

There are currently no treatment protocols approved by medical authorities for microdosing in neurogenesis or mental disorders. Therefore, always consult a doctor or psychiatrist before considering using psychedelics, especially with existing mental symptoms or medication use.

Disclaimer

This blog is for general information only and does not replace professional medical advice. The possible relationship between microdosing and neurogenesis is largely based on animal research and limited indirect human research. There are no approved medical applications or protocols for microdosing to promote neurogenesis. Always consult a doctor or specialist with any health, medication or mental health questions.
